I’m excited to share my first post! If you haven’t read my Welcome! post yet then I strongly encourage you to do so.

Originally I wasn’t planning to pick up a Dominaria United Collector Box, but the possibility of a nice Legend card convinced me. I knew I was going to enjoy it either way as I have also enjoyed the last Collector Boxes, but at least this time there was the possibility of getting a really good pull. The price tag of 250 euro was quite hefty, and I feel like the boxes may slightly decrease in price, but I wanted to open one now.

This great article by Wizards of the Coast themselves nicely outlines the contents of the Collector Boxes, and also of the Draft and Set Boxes. To find the current prices of the Collector Boxes on eBay you can click here.

The box topper

Stangg, Echo Warrior

First up was the box topper! Stangg, Echo Warrior. It looks cool, but other than that it isn’t really anything special. Especially compared to sets like Ultimate Masters it did feel like a bit of a letdown.

A Lost Legend?!

Glyph of Reincarnation

Next up is the coolest part of the box! I did actually manage to hit a Legend card, I could already see it coming when I saw the edge of a card that looked a bit old, definitely noticeably different than modern cards. Unfortunately Glyph of Reincarnation is pretty much just a 1 euro card, but it could’ve also been a Tabernacle! With odds of approximately 3% per pack this box had like 1 in 3 odds to get any Legend card, so I am very happy that I got to relive a bit of history and pull one myself.

The rarest cards

Textured Foils
Dominaria United Borderless Foils
Borderless Foils

Normally I’d call this section Big hits or something, but unfortunately that was not the case. What we do have is a selection of very cool looking cards! My personal favorite is the Defiler of Vigor which definitely deserves a close-up as seen below.

The textured foils do look nice, but it is a bit hard to capture it on camera, it is better to see them in person. The texturing is not as apparent as with for example Pokemon Full Arts. The stained glass treatment is pretty cool though. And the Borderless Foils are looking awesome as always.

Commander

Commander did get some cool looking cards! Personally the Etched Foil cards are my favorite, perhaps even better than the more rare Textured Foils. In particular the vertical borders have a real nice shine to them.

Below are my favorite cards of the commander set: Jedit Ojanen, Mercenary and Rasputin, the Oneiromancer. What’s not to like about a Cat Mercenary and about Rasputin?

Rasputin is somewhat recent too with his role in The King’s Man!

Mythics and Rares

Dominaria United Mythics and Rares

The regular Mythics and Rares are probably the least exciting part of opening the box, apart from the commons and uncommons of course. But at least they are all Foil, which is pretty neat!

Beautiful lands

Dominaria United stained glass basic lands
Dominaria United Borderless Pain Lands

And the last pictures are for my favorite part, the lands! The basic lands come with a beautiful Foil stained glass treatment and the Borderless Pain Lands look beautiful too!

Was it all worth it?

The answer is: It depends. Looking at it from a monetary viewpoint I would say no. But you do get beautiful pack-fresh cards that you know you all have pulled yourself and you get a really nice pack-opening experience. And the chase for a Lost Legend definitely adds to that experience. So from an enjoyment viewpoint it is surely a yes!

A Sheoldred, the Apocalypse or a Liliana of the Veil would definitely have helped to get some value back. And even a Serra Paragon, Jodah, the Unifier or Leyline Binding would have helped a lot. But they didn’t happen, and I don’t think you can expect every box to have those, though one of them would’ve been nice. But that’s a part of opening boxes too, you don’t always get lucky.

What are the biggest hits we have?

  • Borderless Foil Silverback Elder (#418): 16 euro
  • Foil Defiler of Vigor (#412): 10 euro
  • Borderless Foil Rundvelt Hordemaster (#409): 8 euro
  • Textured Foil Braids, Arisen Nightmare (#329): 7,50 euro

Those prices are rough estimates from Cardmarket on 26 September 2022. Of course there are more cards in the 3-5 euro range, so not all is lost, I am pretty confident however that we are nowhere close to the 250 euro box price. But maybe it is a better idea to just ignore the value of the cards and remember the opening experience.

Update: I ran the numbers and wrote a post about it: Dominaria United Collector Box: The numbers. It gave me a 69% theoretical return in the end, which is not bad at all for this box!
